Residency through family ties

Family Reunification for Residents

Allows permanent residents and Panamanian citizens to apply for residency for their spouse, children and parents, provided they can evidence sufficient economic solvency to support them.

What it involves

What this category is

The general family reunification route: someone who is already a permanent resident or Panamanian citizen applies for residency for their dependent relatives.

A two-year provisional residency is granted first, and permanent residency may be requested afterwards.

Who it is for

  • Spouses of permanent residents or Panamanian citizens.
  • Children under 18, and children aged 18 to 25 who study regularly and are economically dependent.
  • Relatives with disabilities and dependent parents.
  • Minors under the guardianship or care of the resident or national.

Documentation

Required documents

Every foreign document must be submitted translated into Spanish and legalized through an apostille or Panamanian consular authentication.

  • Evidence of the resident's or citizen's economic solvency: tax return with a tax clearance certificate.
  • Notarized power of attorney and application.
  • Documents evidencing the family relationship: birth and marriage certificates.
  • Criminal record certificate for the dependent.
  • For children aged 18 to 25: proof of regular studies and of economic dependency.

How we work

The process, stage by stage

  1. Reviewing solvency and relationship

We verify the applicant's documented income and the paperwork evidencing the family relationship.

  2. Preparing the file

The power of attorney and application are notarized and the certificates and the dependent's criminal record are gathered.

  3. Provisional residency

The application is filed and two-year provisional residency is obtained.

  4. Permanent residency

Once the period is complete, permanent residency is requested with updated documents.

Additional considerations

  • Naturalization requires demonstrating basic knowledge of Spanish, and of Panama's geography, history and political organization.

The amounts, timelines and requirements on this page summarize the immigration rules in force at the time of review and may change by decree. This information is general, does not constitute legal advice and does not guarantee approval of any application: each case must be assessed individually.
